MULTIPLE CASUALTIES AS FLOOD GROUNDS BUSINESS ACTIVITES IN LAGOS Due to the heavy and terrible downpour that occurred in Lagos on Sunday, business activities were grounded as many resident stayed back to battle the aftermath of the flood. While few commuters who attempt to operate were stranded at various bus stops across Lagos as flood submerged roads and rendered mobility impossible. In many areas, the drainage channels, canals and the roads were swallowed up by flood. However the flood has also thrown residents of the state in mourning as multiple casualties are continued to recorded across the state. In Aboru community of Agbado Oke Odo Local Council Development Area of the state about 10 dead bodies were recovered among several people who were said to have been drowned . In Ifako-Ijaye Local Government of the state, a 13-year old boy of a police officer, was buried alive this yesterday morning when the house where he resides with his parents collapsed. The building located at Unity Street near the canal, off Aina Ajobo Street close to Ifako-Ijaye Local Government Secretariat, collapsed as a result of the Sunday heavy rain. Another teenager is still said to be buried inside the debris of the collapsed building and local diggers were making efforts this morning to recover the body. While 15 other houses in the area collapsed yesterday, residents of affected areas were busy trying to salvage some of their belongings from the flood. As a result of the heavy rain, Governor Babatunde Fashola directed that all public schools in the state be shut as government assesses the impact of property damaged by the flood, saying that the state would not allow any child to be affected by the incident. The Governor who immediately embarked on tour of the areas worst hit by the flood had ordered occupants of houses hitherto marked for demolition to relocate immediately or be forced out by the government. Fashola who was visibly disturbed by the plight of his subjects blamed the excessive flooding of the blocked drains urging those whose houses are on the drains to bring them down on their own or be prepared to pay the government the cost of demolishing the buildings. Fashola overwhelmed by the problem said he would solicit for fund from the Federal government to tackle the problem of flooding and mitigate the sufferings of the displaced people.

However, through the help of internet, all the three mediums can be suitably converged into one, and everybody all over the world can read news on the Internet. They can also watch videos, television shows, listen to music, and download and upload pictures, music and videos.
Meanwhile, without mentioning Berger (2008: 168) identifies seven types of convergence, we can’t discuss media convergence, and they are:
1. Corporate convergence (as in joint ventures) between telecom and media companies
2. The branching out of a traditional print corporation into Internet publishing, audio/video or mobile
3. Reverse publishing from web to print
4. Production processes where content is coordinated or shared.
5. The convergence of skills set of previously segregated specialist media practitioners- whether reporter, news editor, or production personnel

TELL as the first and one of the strongest Nigerian magazines doesn’t have a corporate convergence with any telecommunication company due to the fact that this type of media convergence does not exist in Nigeria.
However, The branching out of a traditional print corporation into Internet publishing, audio/video or mobile which is the second type of media convergence was adopted by Tell by uploading their weekly publication on their news site (www.tellng.com) to make the magazine accessible to their readers anywhere in the world with the help of internet either on phone or computer. So, those that don’t have access to hardcopy will get the softcopy from the magazine website.
Also, TELL magazine publish from the web into print because they don’t have correspondent outside the country so they download important international stories and pictures from foreign sites like reuters.com, Bloomberg.com and so on.

NIJ STUDENTS WEEK ENDS BLISSFULLY

The long awaited students week of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism came to an end last week Friday in the main auditorium of the institute.

The event which kicked off with a praise concert was the first ever students week held by the school and turned out to be a blissful one.

Although some students doubted the success of the students week saying that the organizing committee don’t have any event management experience, Ola Abraham Emmanuel, the chairman of the students week committee and an HND two student of the school commented on the students week saying that he was glad that the students week was successful and he thanked all those who supported him.

It was an event-filled week as the students had their rag day, cultural day, student-lecturer friendly match, a seminar with honorable Abike Dabiri Erewa and lots of fun games.

On the concluding day of the students week, the Mr. and Mrs. NIJ pageant took place in which Patrick Edem and Grace Onuoha took the crown.

They were highly celebrated by everyone including the provost, Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Ikem, the lecturers and other contestants.

In their speeches, they both appreciated God and everybody who supported and made it possible for them to become Mr. amd Mrs. NIJ which was the first beauty pageant done in the school.

Awards were also given to students of great attitude like Jennifer who won the award for best behaved student, Ola Abraham Emmanuel who won the award for best student overall and Buniaminu Ayelabola won the award for best dressed male student.

The provost urged the awarded students to always represent the school positively anywhere they go.

PROTEST OVER FARMLAND IN EWEKORO

About 22 communities in Ewekoro local government area  of Ogun State has called on the Federal government to save them from private companies ( Dangote cement, Nigeria Gas company and the Nigeria National Petroleum Company) who allegedly has acquired their land illegally and destroyed their farm land.
The communities which include Onigbedu, Aga-Olowo, Aga-Akinronbi, Aga-Odofin, Aga-Abogun, Kajola, Babalawo, Orile-Owu, Oluagun, Olujobi, Ade-Agba, Oke-Oko , Egbado, Imokan, Agbon, Lapeleke, Morekete, Eruku among others in a protest to Gasline project site constructed by Nigeria gas Company  explained that the Ogun State government under the administration of Otunba Gbenga Daniel acquired their land for a private company, Nigerian Gas Company, NGC, without the knowledge of land owners.
The protest lead by the Chairman of the Baale in  Council of Ewekoro Communities, Chief Simeon Onigbinde,  said  that the private company has caused damages to their land such that farming activities cannot be performed on it
He further explained that the NGC promised to compensate the communities within a week for the damages caused to the land but instead, the NGC installed police men to harass and assault indigenes that step on the land.
“the companies who are working on our land had brought police to intimidate us, that we can go to our farms again, our only source of drinking water has been polluted yet their (the NGC) did not pay us any compensation for the damages” Onigbinde added.
“The NGC cannot just come and exploit us and destroy our community without any compensation nor meaningful development to our community. We need schools, we need hospitals, we need pipe borne water.” Chief Onigbinde added.
The Ewekoro Communities also  alleged that the Divisional Police Officer DPO  of Ewekoro police station, CSP Wale Lawal,  of promoting actions likely to lead to breach of peace and tranquility by providing security cover for the private company to massively damage crops, land, and fishing in the community.
The communities therefore demand that the NGC immediately pay compensation for the massive damage and re-valuation exercise that was carried out by its agents and privies.
